KIGALI - Residents around Kigali city are ignorant about activities of renaming the city streets that was supposed to take place during yesterday’s monthly community service exercise.

From various interviews, it was confirmed that people know little or nothing about the resolution to rename the city streets.

Augustin Mushimire, in Muhima Sector said that he did not know anything about it (street naming exercise) but hoped it would be talked about by his village leader after the Umuganda.

Ababo Catarina, in Gikondo, also claimed they were only doing community service and there was nothing like renaming the streets on their programmes.

She said she had heard something about it on the radio but she didn’t see it taking place during yesterday’s umuganda.

Ezekiel Kabendera, a resident of Gasave, Musezera Cell in Gisozi who seemed to be informed unlike the rest, said that they have already identified the names for their streets but haven’t put the sign posts yet.

"We are also going to give names to not only streets, but plot numbers for houses as well. This will make our city more organized and help to ease identification of places,” Kabendera said.

Bruno Rangira, the Director of Media and Communication at Kigali City Council, said that yesterday’s Umuganda was for only proposing names for the streets.

"Local leaders were supposed to brief the community and get suggestions for names. The process started at village level, then it will proceed and go through the District then City Council,” said Rangira.

He added that the names will be forwarded and tabled to the Cabinet for approval in a month’s time.
