DEFENDING champions APR thrashed rivals SC Kiyovu 4-1 on the third day of the 2011/12 Primus National Football league yesterday at Nyamirambo stadium.
New signings Dan Wagaluka and Olivier Karekezi scored a double each to send APR at the summit of the football league standings.
Wagaluka scored from a long range on the first minute and Kiyovu goalie Sebastian Habimana could not hold the ball which slipped into the goal post.
Jean Shyaka responded with a header but goalie Jean Luc Ndayishimiye was already in time to save it. A few minutes later Faty Papy beat five defenders and a goalie only to make a back pass which was cleared by Godfrey Katerega.
The old giants missed several chances from Eric Serugaba and Rodriguez Murengezi but led in possession until the end of the first half.
The military side returned back strongly in the second half with Karekezi converting a rebounding shot taken by Albert Ngabo on 50th minute.
Substitute Landry Gashema dribbled past Ismail Nshutiyamagara and Twite Mbuyu to strike past Ndayishimiye after three minutes of the second half.
Karekezi snatched his second goal of the match after meeting a perfect set-piece from Kabange Twite on 75th minute.
With substitutions over, SC Kiyovu were forced to play ten men with ten minutes to go after their right back Radju Niyonshuti clashed with Jean Baptista Mugiraneza in an aerial ball battle, damaging his dental formula which sought urgent treatment.
Wagaluka added more pain to the old giants on 85th minute as he unleashed his masterpiece shot to net the fourth goal for the military side.
The victory left APR at the top of the standings with nine points while SC Kiyovu remained on sixth position with four points.
Action continues this afternoon with five matches expected to be played across the country. Police hosts newly promoted side Espoir at Ferwafa turf; Nyanza will play away to Etincelles at Umuganda stadium; Amagaju will host La Jeunesse in Nyamagabe; Mukura plays to AS Kigali at Mumena while the game of the day which will pit Rayon Sport against Marines will be played at Nyamirambo stadium.
