Since the beginning of this year, there have been major changes in the management of public transport in Kigali. Now these changes have been cemented and are expanding to the upcountry public transport sector as well.

Kigali Bus Service has pioneered many of the reforms. Recently they introduced new modern buses that have a capacity of 80 passengers.

This has served to ease congestion at bus terminals, and also ensured that passengers reach their destinations in time.

At one time, public transport in Kigali city was on the verge of becoming a nightmare. Now, with focused and strategic private sector investment in the sector, real improvement is being realized.

Other transport companies have also introduced e-Ticketing for upcountry destinations. The system is a precursor to an online booking system.

It will help reduce congestion in taxi and bus parks for vehicles plying upcountry routes. Delays in buying tickets, and even incurring losses, when tickets are lost, will be no more.

This is a highly convenient system for passengers and transport operators.

It is imperative that passengers embrace these new and convenient changes in the transport sector. Importantly, other public transport companies should also embrace and invest in some of the new technologies that can help to deepen these reforms throughout the entire public transport sector.
