SOS Children’s Village, an international charity organization plans to build a primary school worth $3 million (approx Frw1.6bn) in Kayonza District, Eastern Province.

The new school will be built together with a children’s village as has been the case with other three centres the organization runs countrywide.

This was revealed this week during a visit to the country by the SOS president worldwide, Hermut Kutin who said the foundation stone for the new school will be laid in May.

Other centres are in Gasabo (Kigali City), Nyamagabe (Southern Province) and Gicumbi (Northern Province).

According to Alfred Munyentwali, the SOS Rwanda country director, the proposed village would include a medical and social centre that would benefit surrounding communities.

The SOS president said that his visit was aimed at assessing SOS programmes in Rwanda in line with its mission of helping vulnerable children. He pledged to increase the capacity of Gicumbi Village..This village was built to take care of children orphaned by the 1994 Genocide.

The proposed new primary school will have capacity to accommodate more than children.

The organisation began its operations in Rwanda in 1978 with the construction ofthe Kigali-based children’s village.

A total of 420 orphaned children are accommodated in the three existing villages countrywide.
