SOS president visits orphans

GICUMBI — The President of SOS International, Helmut Kutin, has commended foster mothers in the country, saying their role is central in restoring hope of orphaned children.

He made the remarks on Thursday, while visiting Byumba SOS Children’s village in Kageyo Sector, Gicumbi district. The village is an orphanage funded by SOS International.

Upon his arrival, he was welcomed at the children’s village by the district Mayor, Bonane Nyagezi, the RDF 408 Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Eric Murokore, and Byumba SOS director Calixite Rwabuhungu among others. This is his second visit to Rwanda since nine years ago.

In the company of district leaders, Kutin visited the SOS primary school, clinic and residential houses. In his speech he commended the childrens’ foster mothers for the untiring efforts in caring for the children. Each foster mother was decorated with a gold ring on her finger, in appreciation of their parental role.

"You should all show compassion to these vulnerable children because they are future leaders,” said Helmut. He promised to solicit more funds from International well-wishers to assist expand Byumba SOS Children’s Village.

"I have no money myself, but I have many friends worldwide who are willing to assist this children’s village,” he added.

Also awarded with a present sealed in a special envelope, was Dr. Diedonnée Bajunaki, who reportedly played a key role in treating the children at the village during the 1994 Genocide.

In his speech, Mayor Nyangezi thanked Kutin for his unwavering support to vulnerable children in Rwanda. He promised SOS Byumba full support from the district.

"Your activities are in line with Rwanda’s vision,” said Nyangezi. Present at the function were also the SOS Country Director, Alfred Munyentwari, and Willy Nkurayija of SOS Nairobi.
