Rwanda Housing Authority has announced plans to start sensitising Rwandans, particularly those living in urban areas, to consider living in apartments, rather than the present residential housing models.

This, according to the authority, will help address land shortage considering the size and growth of the population.

With apartments, housing development will be vertical rather than the ongoing horizontal construction that takes up large chunks of land.

In many developed nations with a high urban population density, apartments are ideal as they ensure better management of resources and services.

All stakeholders, including real estate developers, should adopt RHA’s target to have at least 90 percent of the urban population living in apartments because at the moment, the concept is still untried in the country.

It is imperative that the future of our cities is put into consideration during the ongoing development process. The advantages of apartments are numerous and if the idea is well-marketed, the Rwandan people would easily adopt it.

RHA should also work closely with municipal authorities, to ensure that the construction of apartments are included in the cities’ master plans and investors in sector are given incentives.
