Kayonza- The ongoing land registration process in the Eastern Province will be completed by June 2012, Emmanuel Mukunzi, the Deputy Registrar of Land Titles, has disclosed.

Mukunzi told The New Times yesterday that, so far, the registration process has been smooth.

"We started with Bugesera and Kirehe districts...we have encountered minor challenges. But I must say that by June 2012, we shall have covered all the districts in the Eastern Province,” Mukunzi said.

Protais Murayire, the Mayor of Kirehe District, pointed out that land registration was key to ending land-related conflicts as it will help to clarify ownership, demarcations and size of land.

"This greatly reduces risk of fraud and helps solve disputes easily, in addition to creating and maintaining an up-to-date public record,” the mayor said.

Theogene Ndahayo, a resident of Kirehe, told The New Times that they were pleased with the registration because the title deeds would help people obtain loans from banks.

"We shall definitely use the land titles to acquire loans...it has been difficult for us to get loans without guarantees,” he said.
