Burera - Close to 500 members of community policing committees (CPCs) from all sectors in the country, yesterday began a training program on crime prevention at the Peace and Leadership Centre, Nkumba in Burera District.

This is part of the three-week national civic education program popularly known as, ‘Itorero Ry’igihugu.’ Participants will be briefed on Rwanda’s core values, measures to promote peace and order within their local communities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Police Commissioner, Cyprian Gatete, said that Rwanda is committed to ensuring security for her people and their property.

"CPCs support other security organs in dealing with crimes in our society. To prevent crimes, we want to create a peaceful secure environment not only for the Rwandan people, but for visitors as well,’’ Gatete said.

The civic education program which attracted 22 women and 423 men, follows the concluded good governance training attended by all sector executive secretaries.

Boniface Rucagu, the National Chairman of Iterero Task Force, urged members of the committees to restore the principles of unity, patriotism and integrity as they go about their work.

The CPCs will use the platform to share experiences and means to support the implementation of the government’s development programs within their respective areas.
