As the world celebrates the International Day of Peace, today, police has announced plans to deploy peacekeepers to the western African country, Ivory Coast.

This was disclosed yesterday by Police Spokesman, Theos Badege.

Rwanda has contributed towards restoring global peace thorough various initiatives including peacekeeping.

"Currently, Rwanda has 413 peacekeepers in various countries including Haiti, Sudan, Liberia and Southern Sudan,” Badege said.

He added that Rwanda has been involved in peacekeeping missions since 2005 and has since deployed over 900 officers.

Badege further pointed out that Rwanda is globally recognised for her peacekeeping efforts.

"In a recent UN Report, we were ranked number one in having the biggest number of female peacekeepers. We were ranked eighth in general contribution of peacekeepers,” said Badege.

Rwanda will today join the world in marking the Peace Day through a walk that will stretch from the KBC roundabout in Kimihurura to the Amahoro National Stadium.

A UN resolution established the International Day of Peace in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the UN General Assembly.

The Peace Day, which was first celebrated in 1982, was held on the third Tuesday of September each year until 2002, when September 21 was designated as the new date for the International Day of Peace.

In 2001, the assembly decided that the International Day of Peace would be observed annually on September 21 starting from 2002.
