HUYE - Huye District authorities inaugurated two houses constructed for vulnerable widows in Buhimba Cell, Rusatira Sector.

The houses, worth over Rwf 2.7 million, were handed over to the beneficiaries who lived in thatched houses commonly known as Nyakatsi.

"It is a new chapter in my life,” Philomina Mukagatari 54, one of the beneficiaries said.

"When I lived in a thatched house, I could hardly sleep. Rain soaked the house and if it was not rain which interrupted my sleep, it was lizards and insects falling off the roof. I was desperate.”

Anastasie Mukabatangana, another beneficiary said: "Today I feel very delighted; I can see a new day coming. I will now sleep soundly.”

The widows also received mattresses and foodstuff to help them start a new life.

According to the Huye District Executive Secretary, Védaste Nshimiyimana, the houses were put up as part of efforts to get rid of thatched houses.

"The Government has invested a lot in eradicating thatched houses and finding decent accommodation for needy people,” Nshimiyimana observed.

"We contributed what we could to build these houses and today it is a pleasure for us and we are proud of being part of this move.”

Arsene Kabalisa, the Executive Secretary of Rusatira Sector, thanked the district employees for their contribution towards the project.

He noted that their support came at a time when the sector and its residents were working hard to get rid of thatched houses.

Rusatira Sector had about 1,042 thatched houses. According to Kabalisa, all the houses have been replaced by new ones.

"Just under a 100 residents are still waiting for the completion of their houses but we hope that in a period of 2-3 weeks, all the houses will be completed and handed to the beneficiaries,” he noted.
