Champion APR started their 2011/12 Primus National Football League campaign with a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over newly promoted side Espoir yesterday at Kigali regional stadium, Nyamirambo.
Skipper Olivier Karekezi opened his APR account on his league debut when his curled free-kick from 25 yards on the 60th minute rested in the back of the new boys’ net.
Espoir wasted a very good opportunity to the lea in the first half when former APR midfielder Bebeto Lwamba missed a penalty on 45th minute. Bebeto hit the post after Ismail Nshutiyamagara had fouled another former APR player Abubaker Munyembugu in the box.
APR’s other new signing s Dan Wagaluka and Selemani Ndikumana missed sitters from inside the penalty box.
Elsewhere, title pretenders Police Fc registered the biggest win on the opening day of the season, hammering Amagaju 4-0 at Kicukiro turf.
Ugandan import Meddie Kagere scored the first hat trick of the season while his compatriot Deo Othieno grabbed the fourth goal as law enforcers laid a mark for the new campaign.
Another newly promoted side Nyanza Fc also made a losing start to life in the top flight division with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of SC Kiyovu at Mumena stadium.
Eric Serugaba and Rodriguez Murengezi earned maximum points for the old giants while Omar Sasha scored a consolation goal for Nyanza.
At Kamena, Mukura shared spoils with visitors Etincelles after a goalless draw.
Action continues this afternoon with six-time league champions Rayon Sports playing against AS Kigali at Nyamirambo.
Coach Jean Marie Ntagwabira who will miss Burundian duo of Cedric Amissi and Floribert Ndayisaba said yesterday, "I want to kick off the season with a win and with the team I have, I’m confident about achieving that target.”
His AS Kigali counterpart Thierry Hitimana will be without three key players including James Tubane (ankle), Patrick Rutayisire (shoulder) and Eric Habimana (teeth).
