RUSIZI — Students in the country should desist from ethnic divisions to foster unity and reconciliation, a commissioner of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission [NURC], Hamissi Habineza has advised.

Habineza made the call recently while addressing students of Mibirizi secondary school at the school’s play ground. Students of ATEMI Inganzo Secondary School and from Mibirizi Technical School were also part of the audience.

"It’s very crucial for you students who will become future leaders to foster unity and reconciliation in your respective schools in order to avoid divisions among Rwandans,” Habineza said. He also advised them to desist from the genocide ideology and report such cases to relevant authorities in the area.

The students were urged to maintain discipline, respect each other, and to form interactive clubs at their schools which would address minor problems.

During the meeting, the students were told of some of the factors which caused the 1994 Rwanda Genocide and Habineza reaffirmed NURC’s commitment to avert a repeat of the genocide in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the student community, Jean Marie Musoni called upon the commission to extend their campaign to the local residents, saying some of the community residents still harbour ethnic ideologies.

The commission carried out similar campaigns in all the 29 secondary schools in the district.
