NYAMASHEKE/RUSIZI-The Association of Genocide Widows, AVEGA Agahozo, has so far donated 93 goats to various co-operatives of Genocide widows in Nyamasheke District.

"We are donating to two groups; poor vulnerable groups as well as groups of AVEGA widows who have played a practical role in fighting poverty,” Kalisa Mugabo, Avega Program Coordinator said.

During their routine visits to the widows, they highlighted the lack of fertilisers. However, they noted that the goats would alternatively facilitate the production of manure.

The co-operatives have made impressive strides in development. They have embarked on extensive farming, weaving, and provided improved seeds to other farmers.

"We are farmers but getting fertilisers has always been a problem. With these goats, we are assured of attaining good yields in our vegetable farms,” said Rebecca Mukakabuye, a beneficiary from Bushekeri Sector, Nyamasheke.

Agnes Mukarugwiza, the head of Indashikirwa Co-operative, said they have been trained how to manage low income projects.

"We really deserved this award in our group. After receiving training by AVEGA on investing in low income generating activities, we started saving. We cultivated a carrot farm and another one hectare of cassava,” Mukarugwiza said.

The Executive Secretary of Bushekeri Sector, Eloy Munyankindi, advised the widows to take good care of the goats and donate their offsprings to otherst.
