RWANDAN artistes have joined a campaign to help ease some of the burden created by widespread famine in the Horn of Africa as millions of Somalis continue to suffer through the worst drought.
A group of 13 artistes dubbed ‘All Stars’ released a track titled ‘Humura Somalia’ in a fundraising campaign to save Somalis from dying from famine.
The All Stars are Miss Jojo, King James, Shanel, Jules Sentore, Masamba, Gabiro, Kitoko, Tonzi, Mani Martin, and Alpha Rwirangira, Ziggy55, Riderman and Jay Polly.
"I am honoured to be part of this humanitarian campaign and I encourage even other artistes across the world to use their talents to save the Somalis,” Miss JoJo urged.
She added: "This is an emergency case where people are dying of hunger every minute. They need our support and I believe that if we all join hands we can save their lives.”
The ‘‘Hooked On You’ star said that the song ‘Humura Somalia’ conveys a message of hope to the people in the Horn of Africa nation, who are affected by a prolonged drought, that has put millions of people in danger of starvation.
"The song says that we are the hope of Somalia and calls on the world to react to the situation in Somalia,” Miss JoJo noted.
The song, which was produced at the Narrow Road Production by Pastor P was released on September 3. It was first played at Gitwe Adventist College and at Amahoro Stadium during a match between the Elephants of Ivory Coast and Amavubi of Rwanda.
The artistes’ efforts are in addition to widespread humanitarian campaign initiated by a youth group, Rwanda Youth Campaign for Somalia (RYCS).
Jean Népo Rwema Sibomana, the RYCS-Coordinator, said that the campaign is an inspiration from the recent Rwandan history, where over a million people were slaughtered while the world was watching.
"This is the contribution of our beloved stars as their voice will contribute a lot to the development and the quick growth of this campaign,” Sibomana said.
"We have settled a target of US$1million to be collected within this campaign, and this is the reason we are calling upon each and every person to listen to our voice and feed even one child in Somalia,” Sibomana told the press yesterday.
Meanwhile, the artistes will be holding charity concerts and road shows across the country to raise funds.
