FORMER Amavubi Stars captain Olivier Karekezi is likely to lead his new club APR this afternoon as they start their season with a Primus Cup clash against Marines at Kigali Regional stadium in Nyamirambo.
The 28-year old Rwandan international recently returned to the military side in a 2-year deal and has already impressed Dutch coach Ernie Brandts.
"He is in good form and shape. He is a sure starter tomorrow (today),” Brandts said yesterday.
However, when pressed to confirm whether the midfielder cum striker, who is returning home after spending almost seven years playing in Europe would be given the opportunity to lead the team out for today’s match in the absence of Mbuyu Twite, who is yet to return to training.
The 55-year old for Dutch international could neither confirm nor deny insisting that he needed to first "inform the other players [before the media].”
Marines have never beaten the 12- time league champions but APR has only trained for three days and may struggle against the Rubavu based side. In the early kick off, Etincelles will play Nyamirambo based La Jeunesse.
Meanwhile, last year’s beaten finalists Police eliminated Rayon Sports 4-2 on penalties to advance to the semi-finals of the competition yesterday after normal time ended 1-1.
Pappy Kamanzi put the Blues ahead on the 3rd minute but Meddie Kagere equalized for the law enforcers at the start of the second half. Jean Marie Ntagwabira’s team missed two of their penalties.
In the early kick off, AS Kigali saw off Kiyovu with a 2-1 win. Innocent Habimana and Junior Tabula scored for the Kigali City Council side while Eric Nsabimana pulled one for Kiyovu.
