Police in Gisenyi is holding a man on suspicion of killing his colleague after a drinking spree on Sunday night. The body of 53-year-old Alloys Gahigiro was found dumped in River Sebeya, the following morning after he was last seen sharing a drink with Saidi Mbonigaba. “We don’t want to confirm that he was murdered since they were both drunk and they had to cross the river; it could have been an ordinary accident,” said Benjamin Kamarampaka, the acting Executive Secretary of Rugerero Sector, where the incident occured.
"We don’t want to confirm that he was murdered since they were both drunk and they had to cross the river; it could have been an ordinary accident,” said Benjamin Kamarampaka, the acting Executive Secretary of Rugerero Sector, where the incident occured.
Kamarampaka said that the deceased was found with a bottle of ‘chief waragi’, an illegal brew from Congo, in one of his pockets.
The authorities say that the body was found lying at the shallow end of the river which brought about suspicions of foul play.
"The body has been sent to the Gisenyi main hospital for autopsy then we will make conclusive judgment after we get the report,” added Kamarampaka.
Investigations are also underway to establish whether the two had personal wrangles which could have been behind the death.
