RWANDA men’s volleyball team battles for a final spot against Algeria tonight when both sides meet in the semi final of the volleyball competition of the All Africa games in Maputo, Mozambique.
Rwanda qualified for the semi finals after posting two victories and a loss in the preliminary round of the competition. They lost the opening game to Cameroon 1-3 before beating Seychelles 3-1 and hosts Mozambique 3-0.
In their game against Seychelles, Rwanda came back from a set down to win against Seychelles 3-1 (27-29, 25-13, 25-10, and 27-25).
The win took Rwanda to semifinal, one win away from securing a podium finish. The last group match saw Rwanda overcame Mozambique 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-14).
With the victory, Rwanda sealed second place in the pool with a 2-1 record to qualify for the semifinal for the first time in the history of the All Africa Games.
Coach Paul Bitok told Times Sport yesterday from Maputo by phone that his is side is ready for the challenge posed by the North Africans who emerged top of Group B.
"Algeria is a strong side but we are going to do the needful and win. The players’ morale is high and being able to reach this stage has increased their confidence.
"At this stage, we are assured of a medal. Even if we don’t win the tournament, the least I expect a bronze medal,” said a confident Bitok.
In the second semi final match, Cameroon will lock horns with Kenya.
