Rwanda’s High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, Ernest Rwamucyo, last week, encouraged Rwandans in the Diaspora to maintain the spirit of nationalism and dignity.

The envoy was speaking at a gathering that brought together hundreds of Rwandans living in the UK. He urged them to pass on the good values that characterise Rwandans to their host communities in various countries.

The event that was organised by the Rwandan Community Association in the UK, was also attended by friends of Rwanda from various nationalities.

In a statement, the Secretary General of Rwandan community in UK, Alex Ntale, commended the Diaspora for their contribution towards the development of their motherland.

"The High Commissioner thanked the Diaspora for their hard work and emphasised the importance of building a cohesive, tolerant and productive Diaspora community,” Ntale said.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Bury St Edmunds, Councillor Terence Buckle, hailed Rwandans for the strong relationship that has developed between the two countries, saying that the ties should be cemented.

He further noted that the beneficiaries of the strong relationships are not only the governments, but the citizens of the two countries.

Senator Henriette Umulisa, who also attended the event, reminded Rwandans of the importance of keeping in sync with developments in Rwanda, which she said will help them identify opportunities back home.

The event was also marked by festivities, including sports, that kicked off with a football tournament, the first of its kind featuring regional teams from Manchester, Coventry, Birmingham and London.
