THE sports section of the Sunday Times this week painted a gloomy situation of the national soccer team’s fortunes, indicating that the Wasps’ prospects of playing in the next African Cup of Nations were doomed.

Rwandans have every reason to worry about our football.

I almost shed tears as I watched Ivory Coast wallop the Amavubi. Losing the game by such a wide margin would have been understandable, had it not been at our own home ground.

Regardless of whether we had already lost the chance to qualify, we should have displayed good football.

But as it turned out, they took us to school and walloped us, even without their talisman Didier Drogba.

All over the world, football clubs resist home defeat; which is also a good strategy for those, including ourselves, who desperately need to compete in these prestigious tournaments.

Let us leave this humiliating result behind us and look to the future. Sellas Tetteh as the head coach, and Jules Kalisa the CEO of Ferwafa, must analyse this humbling defeat and draw lessons from it, if we are to have any meaningful national team in future.

For now, we have no option but to watch another continental showpiece go by without our flag hoisted high.
