NYAGATARE- Motorcycle taxi operators (Taxi moto)in Nyagatare District have been warned against recklessness that has cost many lives.

The warning was passed, on Friday, by the Eastern Province Police Commander, ACP Sam Karemera, during the district General assembly held in Nyagatare Sector.

He said that reckless riding, lack of driving licenses among motor cycle operators in the district has been the main cause of fatal accidents that claims people’s lives.

"It is very absurd that we lose people many times over these crazy motor cyclists who recklessly ride without abiding by traffic rules…Police have put in place stiff measures to deal with these people. We cannot continue watching innocent people dying,” he said.

According to Police statistics, five people died in motor cycle accidents in a period of three months in the district.

Nyagatare District has the second highest number of motorcycles after Kigali city.

However, despite many people owning motor cycles in the district, there are very few who possess licenses.

ACP Karemera went on to warn people who carry many passengers on motor cycles, especially on feeder roads.

"There are times when you meet a person carrying three people on a motor bike. This is mainly done on feeder roads. We shall never allow such a person to continue playing with people’s lives.”] but later divert them to do other business.
