The activation of the recently installed traffic lights at various busy junctions in the City of Kigali has been postponed to next week.

In a telephone interview, the traffic chief, CSP Celestin Twahirwa, told The New Times that the launch was halted pending further technical works.

The computerised traffic lights had been scheduled to be operational from Thursday.

"We had switched them on but there was need for further technical activities to be done to effectively ensure that traffic flow is well controlled at some specific junctions,” Twahirwa explained.

"There are some technical works being done on the control panel and together with the city (Kigali) authorities, we are closely monitoring it, but they (traffic lights) will be officially switched on mid next week,  ” he added.

The automatic traffic lights were installed at six busy junctions that include SOPETRAD, Gakinjiro and Peage.

Others are at Gishushu, at YAMAHA at the city centre-Kinamba road and at Kabindi in Kimihurura.

The computerised traffic lights are fitted with cameras that help to prioritise routes with heavier traffic flow. They also indicate the time left for the traffic and pedestrians to stop or take off.
