EASTERN PROVINCE

NGOMA—The national jurisdiction of Gacaca courts has donated nearly 2,500 bicycles to Gacaca judges in the Eastern Province.

The donation will benefit all Gacaca court leaders at cells, sectors, court of appeal and Gacaca coordinators across the districts of Ngoma, Kayonza, Kirehe, Gatsibo and Nyagatare.

The bicycles are largely meant to help in speeding up cases in the second category which are yet to start across the country.

"It has been a challenge collecting documents and files of suspects being tried in distant areas. This caused us to postpone certain cases thus slowing down the process," Bernard Rutayisire, an official of the Court of Appeal in Kibungo said.

Rutayisire, who also the head of good governance at Ngoma district, added that lack of transport had hindered the timely dispatch of summons for witnesses. There are about 46 category two Genocide cases in Ngoma district.
