NYAMASHEKE - Nyamasheke District is rallying residents to construct classrooms for the successful implementation of the 12-year basic education programme in the area.

The district needs over 165 classrooms and 180 restrooms.

The construction works must be completed by December ahead of the next academic year that starts in January.

Residents are expected to contribute through brick-making, collecting stones and levelling the ground where the classrooms are to be put up.

"We call upon residents to continue their unconditional support through communal work and financial contributions. Sure, by December, the construction will be complete, "said Nyamasheke Mayor, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana.

The district together with residents hailed the Ministry of Education for providing cement and other construction materials.

Residents in Bugarama Sector contributed construction materials worth Rwf 1.2 million towards the construction of six classrooms at Groupe Scolaire St Paul Muko.

The materials included bricks, stones and sand.

"We are set to start construction. The residents are also ready to provide labour,” said Egide Gatera, the Executive Secretary, Bugarama Sector.

Residents vowed to do their best within their respective sectors to build the required number of classrooms.

"Every guardian and parent should contribute towards the 12 years of basic education program. It’s our children’s future at stake,” a parent in Bugarama challenged.
