NYAGATARE-The Governor of Eastern Province, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, has called on farmers and local leaders in Nyagatare District to increase maize production to meet the growing market demand.
The Governor made the call, Thursday, during the district’s General Assembly that convened in Nyagatare Sector.
The meeting was called to stress the role of all stakeholders in addressing the challenges hindering sustainable development in the district.
Kirabo commended Nyagatare maize farmers for the improved quality of maize, calling for concerted efforts to double production.
"International organisations like the World Food Programme commend the quality of your maize, but the quantity is still low. You should put more efforts and increase the quantity,” she said.
WPF has, for the past few years, bought grains from farmers under the Purchase for Progress (P4P) program.
During the meeting, the rising crime rate was cited as one of the main hindrances to development in the district.
The Eastern Province Regional Police Commander, ACP Sam Karemera, urged local leaders to closely work with the Police to stem crime in the district.
"We have a number of crimes that range from rape and defilement, consumption of illicit brew and many others that derail the district’s development trends. But with your commitment as leaders, these crimes can be completely prevented,” he said.
A village leader in Karama Sector, John Senabudenge, pinned fellow local leaders, saying they cover up for dealers in illicit brew.
"We should stand up and show that we are true leaders who serve the country,” he said.
