KIGALI - The City of Kigali will spend about Rwf 188m to carry out a study and designs for pedestrians’ fly-overs in various parts of the city.

The Director of Communication and Media at Kigali City, Bruno Rangira, disclosed this yesterday in an interview with The New Times.

"The funds are provided for in this financial year (2011/2012) and the study and designs will also be completed in the same period,” Rangira said.

The city budget currently stands at Rwf 39.7 billion, an increase of 6.2 percent from the previous year, which stood at Rwf 37.5 billion.

The pedestrians’ fly-over, Rangira said, will be established in four locations with heavy traffic and pedestrians’ flow.

The spots include the city’s main roundabout, where pedestrians to and from peage, Muhima, UTC and Rubangura street will use the envisaged structure to cross to either side and at Kimihurura, opposite the Kimihurura Sector headquarters to facilitate pedestrians, especially students and pupils in the schools in the area, to cross roads safely.

Others are at Giporoso and Kisementi roundabout both in Remera.

"The length of the fly-overs will be established after the study and after the completion of the design.” Rangira noted.

The study and the designs had been planned to be complete in the previous financial year, however, Rangira said that it was affected by shortage of funds.
