GICUMBI - Bicycle-taxi operators in Gicumbi District have raised concerns over taxation of their activities, yet they are not allowed to operate on paved streets.

Some of the operators in Byumba town told The New Times that they operate in a state of fear over seizure of their bicycles by the local authorities.

They appealed to the district to intervene.

"We pay Rwf 500. That would be okay if they allowed us to work on paved streets,” said one rider, who disclosed that he earns an average of Rwf 1,000 per day.

Some cyclists requested the district authorities to facilitate them to set up an association to boost their activities.

Responding to the issue, the District Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi, said plans are underway to support the group upgrade to motorcycles to enhance their transport business.

"We are planning to sensitise them to set up associations so that we help them acquire loans from the banks to buy motorcycles,” Nyangezi said.

The police say bicycles cause congestion and accidents on the streets thus confining them to feeder roads.
