The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Karim Gahutu, made the announcement, yesterday, during celebrations to mark the Eid ul Fitr holiday.
He noted that ever since Islam was introduced in Rwanda, more 100 years ago, they have never had a head office, hence the prioritisation of the new project.
"The construction of the Islamic headquarters will be a major project and we are currently looking for funds. So far, we have raised Rwf 60 million,” Gahutu said, adding that it would be based in Nyamirambo, Nyarugenge District.
"I am confident Muslims will raise the money. We are also expecting financial support from other well-wishers, including the government and external funders,” he added.
Eng. Ismael Ntihabose presented details of the project to the public during the Eid El-Fitr celebrations at Nyamirambo Regional Stadium.
"The headquarters will host the Mufti’s residence and office which will stand on a one-storey building. There will be an indoor recreation centre for women meant to encourage women believers take part in various sports,” Ntihabose, who designed the project, disclosed.
He added that part of the structure would be a five-storied modern arena, a 24-room hotel, apartments and a restaurant.
"The structure also has a section earmarked for a library,” said Ntihabose.
