Kayonza - A delegation of over 100 officials from the National Electoral Commission (NEC), led by the deputy chairperson, Fatu Harerimana, renovated over 20 houses belonging to widows in Bwiza village of Nyamirama sector.

The NEC representative in Eastern Province, Frank Kayiranga, told The New Times yesterday that the houses were constructed by the commission in 2003 as part of their social corporate responsibility.

According to Harerimana, the program targeted senior citizens who are unable to support themselves.

"We spent money on the houses... electricity and water is now available.They also have room to keep one or two modern cows,” she said.

"Apart from our civic education responsibilities, we have community development responsibilities as a corporate institution. We built such houses countrywide...we are thus helping the owners to renovate them.”

A beneficiary, Juliana Uwamwezi, 57, admitted that they now live in decent shelter.

"We are grateful to NEC which undertook the time-consuming and detailed technical assistance program and supervised the repair works,” she said.

"The houses were generously donated to us...NEC actually fulfilled a golden promise to assist 20 needy widows in Bwiza village," she observed.
