KIGALI - Chief Superintendent of Police, Celestin Twahirwa, is now the new traffic boss of the Rwanda National Police.

Twahirwa replaces Chief Supt Vincent Sano who has been at the helm of the traffic department since June 2010.

Twahirwa formerly worked as the Director of Operations.

Speaking to The New Times, Police spokesperson Theos Badege, said that there was nothing special about the changes.

"There is no particular reason why the change took place, it is the normal for rotations to take place within the force,” he said.

Badege said that the former traffic chief has been sent to Ghana for further training.

In an interview, Twahirwa said that a lot had been accomplished in the department, noting that he would focus on improving road safety and ensuring that road users respect the law.

"We want to implement the Road Safety Strategy due to the growing number of road users in Kigali and the country as a whole,” he said, adding that the strategy was designed putting into consideration the growing traffic in the city.

Police statistics show that close to 70 percent of accidents registered in Kigali City are caused by motorcycles. Twahirwa says more emphasis would be put to ensure that they abide by traffic rules.

He also added that the department would ensure good customer care through quick service delivery.
