NYAGATARE-Several members of parliament on Saturday joined residents of Bushoga Cell in Nyagatare sector in the monthly community service, commonly known as Umuganda.

Led by the deputy speaker, Denis Polisi, the MPs were accompanied by Eastern Province Governor, Dr. Aisa Kacyira Kirabo and district leaders.

They carried out rehabilitation works on the 20 kilometre Nyagatare-Gicumbi feeder road.

Speaking to residents after the exercise, the deputy speaker explained that they joined residents in community work as part of  their efforts to get closer to the community, share ideas and address different problems the country faces.

"An MP is elected to serve the country not a section of people…that’s why you have seen all MPs representing different provinces coming here to join you in community work. Our mission is to get closer and work together to build the country,” he said.

The Deputy Speaker called on residents to work hard and develop the country.

"There is no one who can develop our country for us. It’s us citizens who should work tirelessly to meet the development targets.”

He thanked Nyagatare residents for the strides taken so far.

"What we have seen here is an example that there are tremendous steps you have taken especially in agriculture,” he said.

Governor Kirabo told the MPs that the residents’ efforts enabled the province to increase its annual agricultural production by 60 percent.
