The head of the Islamic community in Rwanda, Mufti Sheikh Abdul Karim Gahutu, has announced that Muslims will observe the Eid el-Fitr holiday, Tuesday, at Nyamirambo Regional Stadium.

Eid el-Fitr is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the Mufti said that during the fasting period, Muslims focus on unity.

"Unity among Muslims is very important during the fasting period; this is a period we all focus on together for the same cause irrespective of any differences that may exist among us,” said Gahutu.

He added that during the month of Ramadan, Muslims participated in various activities such as reaching out to the poor and peace-making.

"This month is a time of intense spiritual renewal but we are also engaged in several activities especially in helping the poor and the vulnerable people. During this Ramadan month, we paid health insurance for 6,000 needy people,” the Mufti revealed.
