NYAGATARE - The Nyagatare Rice Scheme in Tabagwe Sector, Nyagatare District, is set to produce 21,000 tonnes of rice annually with a projected annual income of Rwf4.5billion once complete.

The project coordinator, Jolly Dusabe, told visiting lawmakers last Saturday, that the project is set to be completed by the end of the year.

"This project is financed the World Bank and we project an annual income of Rwf4.5illion. This project will not only generate income to the country, it will also provide employment to thousands of residents. Presently, over 2,000 people are currently working on construction sites,” she observed.

A group of 20 parliamentarians toured the project.
Led by the Deputy Speaker, Polisi Denis, MPs inspected a 1,500 hectare marshland, where government invested Rwf9 billion in rice farming.

Accompanied by the Governor of the Eastern Province, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira and area local leaders, the MPs were given a guided tour of irrigation canals, drainage and hydraulic structures under construction.

The lawmakers were impressed by the ongoing works at the project sites and thanked contractors for the rapid efforts put in to complete the project.

The construction works at the rice project are carried out by an Indian firm, SPENCON and supervised by SIMA, a Canadian company.
