NYAGATARE-Nyagatare District has set September 20 as the deadline for phasing out thatched houses commonly known as Nyakatsi.

The deadline was set on Friday during a general security meeting held at EPR in Nyagatare sector.

In a meeting that brought together sector and cell executive secretaries, the Mayor, Fred Sabbiti Atuhe, said that strong measures have been put in place to phase out thatched houses in the district.

"It’s again disappointing that after a series of meetings, a number of grass thatched houses are still visible across many sectors in the district. All local leaders are directed to strictly enforce this deadline,” he said.

The meeting exposed a number of sectors exhibiting large numbers of grass thatched houses; Karangazi, Musheri, Rwimiyaga and Nyagatare.

The mayor called on the sectors in question to lead the campaign and get rid of  the houses.

"Be the first to ensure that this issue becomes a thing of the past,” said the Mayor.

The meeting further evaluated crimes committed in the last four months.

According to statistics by the Police, crimes that were committed between May and August this year were attributed to continuous influx of illicit drugs mainly from neighbouring countries.

Police said that the illegal business is normally carried out via porous borders in the district and transported to other parts in the country.
