Amavubi Stars coach Sellas Tetteh has finally conceded that his team only needs wins against Ivory Coast and Benin as morale for the team when they start their 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Eritrea in November. Rwanda’s chances of qualifying for their second Africa Nations’ Cup finals appearance appear all but over even if they win both of their ties against Ivory Coast and Benin.
For the 2012 finals which will be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, only the top teams in each group and the best two second placed teams including the runner-up of Group K (which has 5 teams) will qualify.
There are already two best runners-up which are Tunisia and Malawi in Group K and both countries have 10 points with two games to go, so even if Amavubi win their two matches, it will only take them to nine points.
But Tetteh is adamant that the team will be gunning for victory in their last two ties to boost confident and morale in team as they look to start the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign against Eriteria.
"Our main aim will be to win both matches even if there is no chance of qualifying. The wins will help team morale before we take on Eriteria,” the Ghanaian tactician.
Since taking over the National side in March last year, the Ghanaian has been in charge of the team in 15 matches, which include a friendly against Malawi, Cecafa cup matches, Africa nations’ cup qualifiers, Chan qualifiers and championship and U-23 All Africa Games qualifiers.
He only won three, drawn two and lost the rest. The Fifa U20 World Cup winning coach’s two-year contract runs out in June.
