SEED one Jean Claude Gasigwa face Burundian Guy Iradukunda in today’s singles’ final of Simba Cement Open at Gymkhana Club in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Gasigwa reached the final after seeing off Tanzanian Kipigo Tiago in three sets 2-6 6-3 6-2. Though he had a poor start losing the first set, Gasigwa came back strongly to win the next two sets.
Gasigwa will renew his rivalry with Iradukunda of Burundi, who qualified after his opponents Abdu Waziri retired with a back injury.
Gasigwa has set his sight on both the singles’ and doubles categories’ titles. In the doubles’, he is paired with Nkunda and they were due to play their semi final match against Burundi’s Iradukunda and Kent Ntwali by press time.
The tournament has attracted 70 players from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Zambia, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe competing in the Simba Cement Open.
In 2009, Gasigwa won the tournament while the ladies’ title went to Kenya’s Caroline Oduor. Gasigwa has been named in the four man tennis team to compete in the upcoming All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
He, who was dropped from the Davis Cup squad for indiscipline, is in splendid form after winning last month’s ITF East Africa Money Circuit second leg in Kigali. Dieudonne Habiyambere, Mathieu Uwizeyimana and Anatole Bizimana complete the team.
