I was glad to read in yesterday’s paper that the Access to Information Bill is now in parliament, and once passed will oblige public officials to be more forth coming with information.

I was disappointed to hear the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) requires reporters to write official letters if they want information from the organisation. RURA is a public body, answerable to the Rwandan people and should not be subjecting reporters to such bureaucracies.

If the bosses are too busy for reporters, can they hire PR or communications people to work with the media?

May be the Media High Council should embark on a programme to teach holders of public office how to work with the media.

Organisations may be doing good work, but sometimes it doesn’t count if people are not aware.

This, for God’s sake, is the 21st Century.
