GICUMBI - Gicumbi District councillors have been called upon to fully engage in the upcoming senatorial elections.

The call was made by an official from the National Electoral Commission, Oswald Burasanzwe, during a meeting that brought together all members of the District Advisory Council.

The Commission is presently on a tour of the Northern Province briefing the councillors, who are eligible to vote during the senatorial elections, to elect 12 senators to represent  provinces in the next senate.

Burasanzwe urged the councillors to efficiently exercise their duties by representing their electorate.

"You should all turn up for senatorial elections, this is why people voted for you to represent their voices,” he said.

He added that voters should always be attentive to listen to messages passed across by the contestants during the campaigns which will begin on September 15 in Gicumbi District.

"Don’t be moved by unrealistic promises; be wise enough to grasp the right developmental ideas from them,” Burasanzwe stressed.

According to the NEC official, only two senators will be picked from the Northern Province. So far, five contestants have declared their interest.

The eight-year non-renewable mandate of the outgoing senators is coming to end, with elections for the new members slated for September 26 and 27. 

Mayor Bonane Nyangenzi, also reminded the councillors to be time conscious during the elections, urging them to vote early to enable the tallying and release of results on time.
