The Executive Secretaries of all sectors in the country will soon be able to differentiate between quality and substandard products as part of the campaign to ensure that commodities meet standards set by the Rwanda Bureau of Standard (RBS).

RBS will conduct the training to equip the local leaders with skills to monitor the quality of goods and services in their living and work communities.

According to Philip Nzaire, the Director of Quality Assurance at RBS, the training, the first of its kind, will take two to three months, beginning this month.

"This year, RBS is targeting all local government leaders to seriously get involved in the process of fighting substandard commodities countrywide and I believe that the training will help the executive secretaries to clearly understand their role regarding this issue,” Nzaire said.

He added that RBS has trained local leaders in understanding the importance of having quality products in the economy. He added that the institution has also trained consumers, industries, and small traders on improving the quality of their goods.

Nzaire observed that one of the challenges they face is dealing with smugglers who use the porous borders to import poor quality products.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, Theophile Niragire, the Executive Secretary of Kimironko Sector in Gasabo District, said: "This training will be useful because it will enable us to know the basic skills in fighting substandard goods”.
