JEAN Claude Gasigwa has been named in the four-man tennis team to compete in the upcoming All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
Gasigwa, who was dropped from the Davis Cup squad for indiscipline, is in splendid form after winning last month’s ITF East Africa Money Circuit second leg in Kigali. Dieudonne Habiyambere, Mathieu Uwizeyimana and Anatole Bizimana complete the team.
Gasigwa is currently in Tanzania where he is vying for a second Tanga Cement Open title, having won it in 2009.
The lucrative event has also attracted Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe and Robert Buyinza.
More than 70 players from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Zambia, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe are expected to compete in the tournament.
Besides the singles category, players will also compete in the doubles and mixed categories.
Meanwhile, Rwanda will not field table tennis players because of the on-going chaos in the local table tennis federation.
Besides Maricienne Mukamurenzi’s silver deal in 10,000m back in 1987, Dieudonne Disi has come closest to winning a medal for Rwanda in the Games. He finished fourth in the half marathon back in 2007.
