The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, ((NURC) has started working with Search for Common Ground (SCG), an international NGO, on a two-year project which will advance unity and reconciliation programmes in Rwanda. 

An agreement was signed yesterday in Kigali to define how the two will work together.  

"This project comes at the right time. NURC is trying to consolidate and harmonize all activities related to unity and reconciliation carried out by various stakeholders,” said Dr Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, the Executive Secretary of NURC.

He emphasized that the project would help address the problems that were identified by the NURC in its past evaluations of its programmes.

"It has also come at a time when we have completed the first Reconciliation Barometer. Hence the project will help to address gaps that were identified in the survey”.

The reconciliation barometer is a survey that identifies the level of reconciliation in various communities.

Rebecca Besant, the Country Director for SCG, said she was happy to work with the commission.

"We are excited to be working with the NURC on this project, and look forward to engaging with various stakeholders to support their reconciliation efforts.”

The project will, among other attributions, provide technical support to NURC.

Part of the joint efforts includes holding radio shows to educate the rural community on reconciliation.
