KIGALI - More than 500 Indians resident in Rwanda, yesterday gathered at UTEXRWA grounds in Kigali for a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the 65th anniversary of India’s independence

The event was organized by the Indian Association of Rwanda (INAR).

The chairman of the association, Dinesh Kalyan, hoisted the national flag and later on read out Indian President's speech addressed to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day.

He went on to acknowledge Rwanda’s development progress that has facilitated their stay in the country.

"We are living in an organised, well governed, secure, lawful and clean country. We thank President Paul Kagame and his able leadership for spearheading the development of Rwanda,” Kalyan said.

He called upon fellow Indians to preserve the sanctity of the country and work hand-in-hand with the community for more development.

"We must follow and respect the laws of this country and ensure that we become role models in each sector,” Kalyan added.

He thanked those present for their participation in recent activities organised by INAR which included blood donation, sports, painting competition and cultural programs for kids.

Srinath Vardhineni, General Secretary of INAR commended the good relationship between Rwanda and India.

"We are pleased by your continued participation in the activities that promote cooperation and development in Rwanda,” he told his fellow Indians.

INAR provides a common identity to the Indian community in Rwanda through the promotion of unity, friendship and goodwill based on mutual understanding and cooperation.

At the colourful function, children performed various Indian cultural songs and dances.
