MUHANGA-Two people in Nyamabuye sector are in custody over brewing illicit liquor commonly known as Kanyanga.
The duo, Claudine Niyotwagira 26, and Etienne Kagabo were netted at midnight on August 13 after a tip off from citizens.
The suspects were arrested at their home with seven litres of the alcohol, three brewing trunks and other exhibits containing wholesome Kanyanga, raw materials and its residues.
The home doubles as a bar and canteen. Residents allegedly consume the liquor in beer and soda bottles.
"Am sorry. This is my first time to get involved, and won’t do it again. The whole idea was initiated by Kagabo-who said that it was a worthwhile trade," Niyotwagira said.
Kagabo admitted to purchasing the equipment to brew 23 litres of kanyanga.
"I blindly conducted this business when I was told to try it since its profitable" Kagabo said.
Police spokesman, Theos Badege, commended the area residents for reporting the case.
"All wrong doers will be apprehended Our position is clear- Rwanda shall not be a place to produce, consume, or become a transit centre for illegal brew and drugs" Badege said.
The arrest comes barely days after the area police held a local meeting with Shyogwe residents to urge residents to provide information on such illegal activities and desist from the trade.
Shyogwe is the leading crime-laden sector in the district.
