RWAMAGANA - The Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), Maj. Gen. Paul Rwarakabije, yesterday said that prison farms have the capability to increase food production.

He made the remarks during a familiarisation tour of Nsinda Central Prison in Rwamagana District.

Rwarakabije, who was accompanied by Mary Gahonzire, the Deputy Commissioner General, pointed out that the state of affairs in the Prison was impressive.

Addressing officials and prison warders, Rwarakabije reminded them of their duty to help transform the convicts.

"This is a transformational institution. Criminals are expected to change and integrated back into the communities. Every individual concerned must make sure the prison environment helps create the desirable change,” he said.

Rwarakabije went on to commend the inmates for their agricultural productivity.

"The farms you have are very impressive... however, there is need to push our capacity higher, to produce for both consumption and sale,” he said.The prison harvested 200 tonnes of maize last season.
