Ngoma/Rwamagana - A body has been recovered from Lake Birira in Rukumberi sector of Ngoma District.
The body of 31- year-old Etienne Baramfitiye was recovered by fishermen on Sunday, after a resident reported seeing it floating in the lake.
The deceased was a member of a local fishing cooperative; Dufatanye.
According to Ngoma District Police Commander (DPC), Superintendent Albert Gakara, Police have detained scores of other fishermen for questioning.
"We have arrested some suspects...friends and colleagues among the fishermen are the prime suspects. They reported the death in a very suspicious manner,” he said.
He added that investigations were still ongoing.
Venuste Bisangabagabo, the Executive Secretary of the Sector, said that members of the fishermen’s cooperative bore a grudge that could have resulted into the death.
"Members used to accuse the deceased of fishing illegally. You know fishing had been temporarily banned...,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a related development, five people are in custody at Rwamagana Police Station in connection with the death of a 22-year old man.
Theoneste Ntaganda, a businessman in Rutonde sector, Rwamagana District, was stabbed to death by unknown assailants.
One of the suspects, Pascal Mugwaneza, denied any involvement in the killing.
"I had no hand in the death...but because this young man was doing well in business, he could have been a target of malicious neighbours,” he said.
