RUSIZI- District will prioritise hygiene and infrastructural development during the 2011 to 2012 performance contracts.
Mayor Oscar Nzeyimana, announced the performance goals during an Open Day organised by the district this week.
Other areas to be given priority, according to the Mayor, are: modernising farming, upgrading roads, building more schools, health facilities, resettling residents in designated settlements and implementing family planning measures.
Nzeyimana said the reason for organising the Open Day was not only to exhibit the pledges that the district had made before the President, but also to call for the role of residents in actualising the pledges.
"Results don’t just come in a day, achievements come as a result of total dedication towards work on a daily basis,” he said.
"Other districts that emerge in the first positions use no magic; they only work as a team each day with a spirit of winning”.
The event that attracted sector Executive Secretaries and employees from Gihundwe, Mururu and Kamembe sectors also highlighted what the district achieved in last year’s performance contracts, in which the district was ranked sixteenth.
According to the district report, Rusizi performed poorly in the previous performance contracts due to the poor state of the roads at the town centre, failure to complete construction of a market, park and commercial plaza among other reasons.
"Repairing town roads, putting Umuganda in practice twice a month and ensuring modern housing will help,” suggested Gilbert Rukazambuga, the Executive Secretary of Kamembe Sector.
The Executive Secretary of Mururu Sector, Alain Emmanuel Muganga, said they would rally residents behind the campaign.
