The Vice Mayor of Kicukiro District, Florence Uwayisaba, has said that the district will this year construct 60 houses for vulnerable survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During an interview, Uwayisaba said the houses valued at Rwf 300 million will be constructed in Gahanga Sector.

"The construction of these houses is aimed at improving their social welfare, which is one of the top priorities in as far as performance contracts for this year in our district are concerned,” she said.

Uwayisaba revealed that each of the houses will comprise of at least four rooms including a kitchen.

Speaking to The New Times, a Genocide survivor in Gahanga, Solange Muhongerwa, decried the challenging environment they live in.

"There is overcrowding among some survivor families in the district and the construction of the houses will sort out this problem and uplift our living standards because most of us live in rented houses,” she said.

Another survivor, Claire Mukeshimana, said that some of them live in leaking houses that become uninhabitable  during the rainy seasons.

Uwayisaba added that the district will construct another 20 houses worth Rwf100million for historically marginalised people living in various parts of the district.

She added that the district has completed the construction of 55 houses for vulnerable Genocide survivors in Gahanga sector. She added that the authorities have also cleared a site to put up about 400 houses for the needy in Rusheshe sector next year.
