A 30 year old woman is currently detained at Remera police station after allegedly stealing another passenger’s money at the Kigali International Airport yesterday.

Diana Tukundane, a resident of Ntinda suburb in Kampala District is said to own a shop in Kikubo market in Kampala city. Her husband is a Kampala city engineer.

According to police spokesperson Theos Badege, the suspect allegedly picked a bag belonging to Halima Kayumba, a resident of Gikondo, who was travelling to Kampala. She then stole US$400 from the bag and left behind US$350.

According to reports, she denied stealing the money until Police used Closed Circuit Television cameras (CCTV) to pin her down with evidence.

Police spokesperson warned passengers against indulging in such unlawful acts, saying that police would continue using technology to detect and arrest wrongdoers.

"People should have trust and all passengers should know that our police are currently using technology that is based on international standards”.

"This again demonstrates the professional integrity of our police officers towards their work.”

Tukundane said that she had come to attend her friend’s wedding in Kigali and claimed she has no relatives in Rwanda.

She admitted that if it was not for the cameras, she was ready to vanish with the money.

"I wanted to go with the money because I had refused to tell police the facts that I had picked the bag but after discovering that cameras had recorded me, I confessed,” the weeping Dianna told The New Times.

She is due to face court charges soon.
