The Director General in the Ministry of Education, Erasme Rwanamiza, yesterday said that teachers should be exemplary if they are to produce quality students the country expects.

He made the remarks while closing a four-day training workshop on Gender Responsive Pedagogy at FAWE Girls School at Gisozi, Kigali city.

 "We are much more aware of issues that affect girls in schools, including sexual harassment that originates from teachers using gender insensitive language,” Rwanamiza said, underscoring the need for teachers to respect their professional ethics and code of conduct.

The training aimed at facilitating the school’s administration and teaching staff to uphold FAWE`s mission of supporting girls and women to acquire education for development.

Attended by 45 members, it also focused on empowering them to consider the gender responsive teaching and learning strategy.

The headmistress of the FAWE Girls School, Jolly Ladegonde Mukase, said the training exposed teachers, especially new staff members, to the school’s mission.

Speaking on behalf of other trainees, Godfrey Wasswa, said the workshop was important not only in carrying out their school duties, but also in enhancing their families and communities.

 "We shall be able to execute our duties with much emphasis on gender sensitive issues,” Wasswa said.

The national coordinator of FAWE Rwanda, Donatha Gihana, said plans are underway to involve teachers from other schools in similar training workshops.

FAWE operates two exclusively girls’ schools; the one in Gisozi and another at Gahini in Kayonza District.
