The Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), Maj. Gen. Paul Rwarakabije, together with his deputy, Mary Gahonzire yesterday visited Kigali Central Prison commonly known as 1930.

The visit was aimed at assessing how the inmates at the prison carry out various developmental activities.

Among the projects visited were the carpentry and tailoring workshops and a car garage.

"The purpose of our visit was to see the living standards of the inmates and the kind of activities they are involved in because we want to turn RCS into one of the most vibrant government institutions, economically and socially,” Rwarakabije said.

He added that all the inmates at the prison are in good health which he attributed to government efforts to decongest all prison facilities.

The two officials also visited a camp for inmates in Butamwa village, Mageragere sector in Nyarugenge District, who are serving their alternative sentences under the Works for General Interests program known as TIG.

They also visited a site in Mageragere sector where a new facility that will host inmates from 1930 and Remera Prison, will be constructed.

According to Rwarakabije, the TIG inmates at Butamwa camp have completed a four-kilometre tarmac road besides putting up various houses for the needy in the same sector.
