RUTSIRO- The remains of over 800 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi were yesterday accorded a decent burial at the newly unveiled memorial centre in Rutsiro District.

Thousands of grief-stricken mourners, among them top government officials, flocked to the venue located in Mukura Sector for the event.

In a brief address to the mourners, Senator Chrisologue Kubwimana, noted that it was important to remember and pay respect to victims of the Genocide.

"According victims a decent burial is necessary because the Genocide is always going to be part of our history,” he said.

The Senator urged Rwandans to support and speak the truth about the Genocide so as to avoid criticism from those undermining the country’s history.

Rutsiro District Mayor, Gaspard Byukusenge, also condemned the 1994 Genocide.

"It is unfortunate that Rwandans were fooled to kill each other. The country lost a very important part of its population who would have contributed to both social and economic development,” he said.

Byukusenge also challenged the public to draw lessons from the unfortunate past, thereby helping survivors lead better lives and fostering unity and reconciliation among Rwandans.
